Collecting antique furniture is a hobby and obsession of many people in the United States.  There is something mysterious about finding an old piece of furniture and wondering where it has been throughout the years.  Antique furniture collecting can be done anywhere in the country.  There are thousands of antique stores offering furniture from professional collectors and from amateur consignment sellers.  

When you begin collecting antique furniture, it is important to read up on the characteristics of the antiques of the time period in which you are interested.  You do not need to be an expert, but you should be familiar with basic features.  This is so you avoid being tricked into paying premium prices for furniture that is not in fact antique.  There are many books available that outline the things you should know about the furniture you buy.

Antique furniture can be found in antique stores and galleries featuring original finish or refinished antiques.  However, if you are interested in a more adventurous collecting experience, you can also find antique furniture in flea markets, garage sales and even your grandmother’s attic, if you can brave the cobwebs.  When searching for pieces off the beaten path, it is even more important to know the characteristics of what you are looking for.
