Finding a Good Antique Store

Though there are antique stores at virtually every corner in many towns in the United States, finding a good one that suits your needs and price range can be a long and involved process.  Though it is fun to peruse the collections of expensive antique galleries and high priced stores, it is also important to find a store that sells the type of goods you collect at a price you can afford.  

When looking for a good antique store, you will have to visit many different types of vendors.  You should first consider your budget.  If you have a lot of money to spend on your hobby, or if you intend to make it into a business, you should investigate reputable dealers with galleries in your area.  There are many dealers specializing in objects from a particular time period or part of the world.

If you enjoy purchasing antiques as a hobby, you can usually find an affordable antique store in your town’s antiques districts.  Talk to the owners of the store and find out how knowledgeable he or she is about the objects being sold.  Ask for references from other antique buyers and letters of authenticity before making high dollar purchases.  If it is a consignments store, find out how long the seller of the item has been doing business with the store and whether or not their customers are generally satisfied.

Though an antique store is an excellent place to browse, your budget may lead you in the direction of the flea market and garage sale world.  Though it takes a trained eye, you may be able to find rare and special antiques in the most unlikely spaces.  You will typically pay much less for antiques if the seller is not aware of their values.  Knowledge is the key, for if you know more than the seller, you will most likely come away with quite a good deal.
